Today photo-shopping has been a very distinct thought in my mind. It started today at work. Due to the cool and rainy Fall day, our restaurant was on the same page as the slowskie's dial up tone. Which is odd because I figured the people would be pouring in for our Soup & Salad combo, ( Yes, if Olive garden came to your mind then you are correct. I'm a waitress there!) however, I was wrong the Richmond crowd hibernated from the cold.
While awaiting for some tables, two male co-workers were chatting right along about the usual....GIRLS! Male # 1 pulled out is new phone and scrolled through some pictures until he found the one he wanted. He flipped the phone around for all of us to see a young female I would guess in her mid twenty's half naked in a skimpy outfit. She obviously felt pretty enough in the photo to pass it on to this young man. So being the cocky guy male # 1 was, he began to brag about how beautiful she was. "what stunning legs" was an exact comment that fell right from his lips.
Now this conversation seemed to be typical guy talk, expect one thing. Male # 2 hadn't said anything, in fact he was giving the photo a strange look. Finally, male # 2 said the photo had been edited. We all stopped and took another glance over the picture, and from my eye I couldn't see what he was talking about. clearly, I wasn't the only one, because male # 1 got really defensive about it.
So to defend his case, male # 2 pointed out that whatever floor length mirror she was standing in front of was not lining up the way it should. Instantly, it stood out like a sore thumb. It looked as if the mirror was stretched out and put back together with part of it missing.
I guess what shocked me most was the fact someone would take the time to photo-shop themselves. I mean I know it has been done for a while with models, and for the cover of big glam magazines, but I just never thought about someone doing it to their own picture. I mean if in fact this girl really liked this guy, and it wasn't just an I'm hot for you moment, then why would she make a fake picture? If you like someone, and want something to form from this, wouldn't you want them to like you for exactly who and what you are? I feel like photo-shopping is a wrong way to express yourself, for the sole fact that you're changing the picture... it isn't really you.
Maybe I think different from others, but for me, if I met a guy that I actually really wanted to be a part of my life, I would only want them there because they cared and liked me for me. Does that make sense? Am I crazy for thinking that way?
I feel like it is a bad play! I mean think of it like this. Lets say we are all going to have ice cream after class on Thursday, we plan on the time and where to go, but when we get there my cookies and cream is really frozen yogurt. Essentially, it is good, but not what we were expecting. I feel like we are setting ourselves up to be hurt because we posed as something we aren't.
Each of us have a uniqueness about ourselves that makes us beautiful in our own way. This is true for both men and women. We should honor that!
Bruno mars' big hit tells us exactly that. " you are beautiful just the way you are". We all should listen to Mr. Mars' words. Be you, not anybody else, because you are the one and only YOU, no one else can ever be you. Take pride in that!
